As one of those kids with a knack for drawing, I regularly scavenged a sheet of copy paper, a No. 2 pencil and an eraser from the family office. With my visual acuity and affinity for details, I gained my fair share of positive attention by showing off my skill at drawing compelling faces. As a teenager, I discovered ceramic bisque painting and spent more than one summer immersed in my new hobby.
Later as an adult, my artistic hobbies went the way of most things as regular paychecks ruled my weeks, months and, ultimately, years. Employed as a page layout designer in the publishing industry for well over a decade, I found the work well suited to my skills yet longed to do work that was more creative and meaningful.
Eventually, industry changes and the global shift from print-based media to internet publishing granted me a portion of my wish by opening a door to work as a glass artist, but those days proved to be short-lived when the small gallery I worked at closed its doors.
As I found myself facing mid-life unemployment without any real prospects, I struggled to reinvent myself. Through extensive soul searching and some unexpected divine encouragement, my Heavenly Father—in his infinite nature— awakened me to my creative potential, as well as His love. This ignited an exponential increase in my motivation to develop my artistic talent while pursuing my long-held dream of becoming a handmade tile artisan.
As it turned out, the tactile nature of clay and the fluidity of glaze proved to be the antidote to the rigidity and unforgiving sharp edges of glass. Once again the days turned into weeks, months and, ultimately, years, bringing me greater peace, wholeness and a witness of my Savior beyond what I had previously experienced. Whether creative inspiration comes in the form of a flower's graceful arc, the playful antics of birds at the feeder, or the endlessly varied twists and turns of a tree reaching towards the sky, the simultaneous order and spontaneity of nature provide a powerful witness of God's infinite nature.
